Dark times mean dark art, but in the case of “Rose from Above”, dark does not mean depressing. Lacing together rebellious traits of neofolk and darkwave, “Rose from Above” lives in the space between Kurt Vile & Billie Eilish, Devendra Banhart & Phoebe Bridgers. The difference is that Matthew Heller’s work ends in hope. The narrator sings from beyond the grave recounting stories of love, drugs, abuse, and depression. Yet it’s a song steeped in love; filling the listener with hope, elucidating the darkness until it’s illuminated.

Rose from above lyrics
-
Its six am
And your crying in bed
Thinking about a dream
That made you afraid.
Six becomes eight
And your dream becomes day
Only so many ways
To say I love you
The days a nightmare
And you’ve lost all control
And your ex lover is gone,
Or at least a total asshole
16 blocks from my new
best friend
Its a cowboy Dan under the Morrison bridge
Chorus:
Its alright, its okay, you are not falling apart.
Its alright, its okay, you are not falling apart,
your thoughts whirl around
your big white room
I can see you up here,
from my needle and spoon
sick of telling you how
to be my baby
sick of tragedy town
where everyone is so cagey
Chorus:
Its alright, its okay, you are not falling apart.
Its alright, its okay, you are not falling apart.
Its alright, its okay, you are not falling apart.
Its alright, its okay, you are not falling apart.
Id smoke it right now,
If I had a knife,
Your mother bursts in
Blaming you for your life
And we laugh and we laugh
From here to the blue
Only so many ways
To say I love you
